What to Pack & Wear in Morocco
What do you wear in Morocco? This is one of the first things I thought of when I was planning my trip to Marrakech - read about my trip here! Traveling to a conservative country can be tricky. Most locals dress conservatively, while most tourists stick out and where whatever they want. I think a common middle ground is perfect! We never got denied entry anywhere, but one of my friends did end up buying a scarf on the street to cover her shoulders. It’s respectful (and you will also get less attention).
What To Wear
Long, flowy, airy clothing: Morocco stays fairly hot year round - we went in November and it was pretty hot during the day. I brought maxi dresses, flowy dresses, wide leg pants, linen shirts, etc. Don’t pack anything that’s too thick, you’ll get hot. Before my trip I stalked the Marrakech Instagram tag to see what people were wearing at the time I was going. Shop at these brands for cute dresses, pants & tops with light fabrics: Free People, Reformation, Faithfull the Brand.
Light jacket: Since we went during the “winter”, it got cold at night. I always needed a jacket when going out after dark. I brought a jean jacket and a leather jacket. It was also handy to have one during the day, you never know when it is going to get chilly. You might not need one at all in the summer - but I have not been so I do not know! I have heard that since Marrakech is in the desert, it gets chilly at night year round.
Bikini or bathing suit: Most riads and hotels in Marrakech have a pool, and if you are going to a spa; the spa will have a pool or hot tub. It’s good to have incase you want to get in or book a last minute spa day! Book a spa day here (very Instagram famous).
Sun protection: AKA sunglasses, hats, shirts, etc. The sun is hot in Morocco. And even if it doesn’t feel hot - it is. The sun is out all day! Make sure to stay protected. Wear sunscreen! This is my favorite sunscreen.
Comfortable shoes: Leave the heels at home! As much as I want to dress up when I travel and wear cute shoes, Morocco is not the place. We walked miles every day, and even had to walk through the old city to get to a taxi for dinner! It is definitely possible, but I wouldn’t recommend it. I brought my white sneakers, lace up heels, and heeled sandals (1 in tall!). Since it was winter I brought booties to wear at night and it was perfect.
Scarf/shawl: If you are packing any tops or dresses that will have your shoulders out, make sure to bring a lightweight scarf or shawl. Carry it with you to cover up when needed! It’s also good incase you get chilly, you can find super cute ones on Amazon.
Crossbody bag or big tote: You will want a bag with you when walking around, because you will want to buy everything in the souks! I always bring bags with me when I travel to fit my wallet, snacks, water bottle, and it can hold any purchases I make that day.
What to pack
Outlet adapter: I always bring mine with me when I travel abroad. I usually bring 2-3 with me because most days I need one for my phone, curling iron, camera, latop, iPad, you name it! It doesn’t hurt to buy a few. You can buy them on Amazon here.
Purse with theft protection: AKA a purse that zips up ALL the way. Whether it’s a tote, backpack, or crossbody; you need to be careful and make sure it is zipped up all the way.
Vitamin C: I eat multiple vitamin C gummies everyday when I am traveling. I rarely get sick, and I swear it helps!
Portable charger: You will most likely be out all day, or doing day trip excursions and your phone can die fast. It’s rare to find an outlet while you are out and about, so I would bring a portable charger. I like this one.
Luggage lock: If you aren’t comfortable leaving your stuff in your room - a luggage lock will help you feel more secure. You can put your valuables in their and they will be locked away while you’re out for the day.
I heard a lot of mixed things about traveling to Morocco, but overall the country wasn’t too strict about clothing anywhere. As long as you look somewhat decent you will be fine, and you won’t give yourself too much attention. We felt pretty safe the whole time and nothing got stolen, but we were also super careful.
